Making My 1st Ball Jointed Doll Part 9
I took the doll apart after testing the joints and painted it with five coats of a mixture of modeling paste and gesso tinted with acrylic paint. In between each coat I sanded the pieces with a fine sand paper. After painting I added detail to the face which is called the face-up and then blushed the body with chalk pastels to bring out the details in the sculpt. The final step is to dress him and put on his wig!

I added a hook to the head and then I was ready to string the doll with elastic for the 1st time to test the dolls ability to stand and sit. It was really exciting to see it all come together.

Making My 1st Ball Jointed Doll Part 7
Working on leg and arm joints in this part. I created the balls for the ball joint by wrapping clay around wooden balls and beads that were smaller than the size I needed. Once they were dry I cut them open and removed the core then sealed the two halves back together. I sanded and shaved the sockets to fit the balls and drilled holes and slits for the elastic to pass through. I then strung the parts with elastic to test the joint function.

Development of the face and head. I added and refined the details then put in the eyes, replaced the head cap that I cut off and sealed the head. Once the head was dry I sanded it smooth.

The Steampunk World's Fair in Piscataway NJ is this weekend May 17 - 19th and I am super excited. I can't wait to dress up and show off some of my creations. I also love the immersive feel of the event and the incredible amount of inspiration I get from seeing the work of others. I have a couple of new pieces that I've made for the event and I will be posting them soon along with photos from the world's fair. If any other deviants are going please comment below. Thanks to all as always for the comments and inspiration I get every day here on Deviant.
